Skill: Program an Optimus E1 GSM Intercom – Basic Settings via Commtel Config App (SMS Method)
Skill level: 3
Technical
Learning Objective:
Learn how to create a site profile in the Commtel Config app, add core functionality (call points, diverts, PINs, authorised dial-to-open users), and send commands to the intercom via SMS — with all operations targeting Relay 1 in pulse mode.
1. Overview
The Commtel Config app allows installers to quickly configure Optimus E1 GSM intercoms using SMS commands. Core setup includes:
Adding the panel in the app via QR or manual entry
Programming call points (button press numbers)
Adding divert numbers for no-answer scenarios
Setting up dial-to-open authorised users
Adding PIN codes (if E1K keypad fitted)
Ensuring all triggers are set to Relay 1 in Pulse mode for gate operation
This ensures the system is functional, user-friendly, and tailored to customer requirements.2. Tools and Materials Required
Smartphone with Commtel Config app installed (Android or iOS)
SIM card installed and active in intercom (with credit and good signal)
Access to intercom PCB for QR code or serial number
Customer contact details (phone numbers for call points, diverts, and authorised users)
PPE: gloves, safety boots, safety glasses

3. Before You Start
Confirm the SIM card is inserted, active, and has credit/data allowance
Check GSM signal strength at the intercom location
Ensure the intercom is powered and accessible
Have all customer numbers and any PIN codes agreed in advance
Confirm with customer whether diverts or dial-to-open functions are required
If keypad version (E1K), check with customer who requires PIN codes and naming convention
4. Procedure
A. Create Site Profile
Open Commtel Config app → “+ Add Panel”
Scan QR code inside intercom PCB or select manual entry
Input system name, serial number, SIM phone number (+44 format), and notes
Save → system now listed on home screen
B. Add Call Point(s)
Enter system → Callpoint Numbers → Add Callpoint
Callpoint No.: 1 (for 1-button units)
Display Name: “Front Gate”
Add 1–3 numbers in sequence, set ring time (10–600s)

Tap Send Command → SMS opens → send → wait for confirmation
C. Add Diverts
Additional numbers can be entered into Callpoint sequence

Input phone number + name
Select “Reject Call & Trigger Relay(s)”
Relay: Relay 1, Mode: Pulse

F. Relay Mode Confirmation
Ensure all functions (callpoints, authorised, PINs) are configured to Relay 1, Pulse mode
G. Final Testing
Action---Expected Result
Press call button---Phone rings → gate opens when call accepted/hash pressed
Call from authorised number----Gate opens silently (call rejected, relay pulsed)
Enter PIN (E1K)---Relay clicks → gate opens
Send SMS command----Panel replies with confirmation
5. Best Practices
Always use international format (+44) for numbers
Label callpoints and PINs with clear names for future reference
Keep SMS confirmations as record of programming
Test all numbers and codes before leaving site
Store profile details in app and in job notes for consistency
6. Common Mistakes to Avoid
🚫 Forgetting to wait for SMS confirmation before leaving site
🚫 Entering numbers without country code → won’t work
🚫 Not setting relay mode to Pulse → gate may latch open
🚫 Adding customer numbers without checking spelling/accuracy
🚫 Assuming SIM has credit or signal without testing
