Skill level: 4
CCTV & Networking
Learning Objective
Understand how to securely reset lost or forgotten passwords for Hikvision devices using the SADP Tool or Hik-Connect app, depending on how the system was originally set up.
1. Overview
If a customer forgets their password for a Hikvision DVR, NVR, or IP camera, the device cannot be accessed without a reset. Depending on whether recovery information or Hik-Connect cloud linking was enabled, engineers can reset via the Hik-Connect app or through the SADP Tool and Hikvision support. Correctly handling this process avoids downtime, ensures security, and maintains customer trust.
2. Tools & Materials Required
Laptop with SADP Tool installed
Network connection (device and laptop on same LAN)
Customer’s Hik-Connect app (if reset via app)
Device serial number, model, and label photo (for SADP reset)
Email access for sending/receiving XML files
Admin password records for updating system after reset
3. Preparation Before Reset
Confirm which reset method applies:
Hik-Connect reset – device already linked to account
SADP reset – no recovery details savedCheck device is powered and connected to the same network as your laptop/phone.
Inform customer that live view and recording may be temporarily unavailable during reset.
Ensure you have permission to change security credentials (documented in job notes).
4. Procedure
A. Reset via SADP Tool (Laptop Method)
Launch SADP Tool → select the device needing reset.
Click Forgot Password at bottom of window.
Select Export → save encrypted XML file.
Email file to support@hikvision.com (or distributor) with:
Serial number
Model number
Timestamp screenshot from SADP
Device label photo
Company/contact detailsWait for return reset file/code (same day in most cases).
In SADP, select device → click Import File.
Apply reset file → set a new strong password.
Confirm login works via browser or NVR.
B. Reset via Hik-Connect App (Cloud Method)
Open customer’s Hik-Connect app.
Select device → go to Settings → Device Password Reset.
Follow prompts (security questions, linked email, or phone).
Enter and confirm a new password.
Test access on app and NVR.
5. Best Practices
Always use a strong password (min. 8 characters, with numbers and symbols).
Record password securely in job file and provide copy to customer.
Update password on all linked devices (e.g., NVR if resetting a camera).
Use the same password scheme across cameras/NVRs for easier support.
Note reset process and outcome in Clik/Dropbox for audit trail.
6. Common Mistakes to Avoid
🚫 Device not on LAN → SADP cannot detect it.
🚫 Using an expired XML reset file (must be same-day).
🚫 Trying Hik-Connect reset with wrong account login.
🚫 Failing to update new password in NVR → feed shows “offline”.
🚫 Leaving customer without documented password details.
7. Safety Information
SSOW – Electrical Safety (ensure safe handling of powered devices).
RAMS – Data Security & GDPR (treat customer login details as confidential).
Never store passwords in personal devices or share via unsecured methods.
Inform customer of downtime before resetting to avoid disputes.
Always confirm identity before changing passwords to prevent unauthorised resets.
